Did you know that hair removal for women is not a recent phenomenon? It seems that women have tried dozens of different ways throughout history to remove hairs that at the time were labeled unfashionable.

You know there are some pretty funny things being said about the history of hair removal. Well maybe they aren’t meant to be funny but they sure do seem funny when you think about them.

Can you imagine tweezing hairs from your body using two seashells rubbed together and then pulling out the hairs caught between them? This form of hair removal is believed to have been practiced as far back as 100,000 years ago. Sounds awfully painful but when imagined in the minds eye the pictures can be quite funny don’t you think?

The funniest image of all has to be an image of the women from the middle Ages. Picture this in your mind. These women plucked and shaved every hair on their neck, temples and forehead even into their hair line to create a high forehead look and don’t forget they removed every hair on their face including all eyebrows and eye lashes. Now that has to be the most bizarre, hysterical, (oops sorry, historical) look.

Then again, burning off leg hairs with a lamp as was practiced by women in Greece around 400 B.C. doesn’t sound funny at all. The only thing that comes to mind with that image is just pure agonizing pain (ouch!).

The thought of using sandpaper or sandpaper like materials that have been used over time to remove unwanted hairs is not a very appealing image either for that matter. These sandpaper materials have been used when money was too tight for women to afford more expensive processes. Boy, women are sure determined to remove unwanted hair from their bodies.

Of course, many of the hair removal procedures used by women today don’t seem to be any more logical or any less painful then the practices for removing hair even as far back as the Stone Age.

When you think about it, the process used in the 1800′s of burning and killing the root of the hair by using a needle dipped in sulfuric acid and inserting it into each individual hair follicle sounds a lot like the use of electrolysis today and every bit as painful.

When you look at the tweezers we use today, are they really less painful then using seashell to remove hair? Maybe they aren’t quite as funny to think about but they are probably just as painful.

Another technique women are once again using is the ancient Indian or some say Arabian art of threading to remove hairs from eyebrows and upper lips. Talk about funny. Have you tried to wind that tiny piece of sewing thread around your fingers as directed and then maneuver hairs in between this wrapped thread so they can be pulled out?

Like they say, threading definitely is an art that is quite interesting to watch when done by a skilled artisan but once again looks painful and definitely not cheap, especially as often as it needs to be repeated in order to stay hair free.

Some women today are even removing the hair on top of their heads and not just for medical reasons any more. This seems like a strange new practice but has actually taken place in many cultures throughout history by women. This is especially true in Egypt due to the extreme heat they put up with in this region of the world. I’ll bet it wasn’t easy or pain free to remove all the hairs from the tops of all of those heads back in ancient Egypt.

It seems that women will go to any length to remove hair from their bodies from shaving, tweezing, threading , sugaring, electrolysis, laser, depilatory creams and even waxing.

How about waxing? What do you think of this technique that has also stood up to the test of time. I don’t know about you but the thought of putting hot wax on my body, applying a cloth to this wax, letting it harden and then pulling it off to remove hairs any where on my body doesn’t sound like a very appealing way to get rid of unwanted hair to me.

It sounds more appealing to just keep the hair then put up with such a torturous procedure as waxing. Oh yes and don’t forget your numbing substance to apply to the area before waxing and look out for swelling, redness or even blisters on your skin afterward.

Don’t you think there has to be a better, less painful way to remove unwanted, unfashionable or unsexy hair then ripping it out in such a barbaric fashion?
