Fiona thought that Monday was going to be another routine day, at the television station where she had been working for the last five years. Nothing ever happened on a Monday. It was a day for relaxation around the office and at best time to have chitchat with old friends.
Her boss David had other ideas, which she soon learned about when she arrived at work at 9:00 am.
Here is what David had to say: “Fiona, I want you to take Jim the camera man and visit a local hair removal salon to do a story on hair removal, which will be a five part mini-series. This series will cover the latest and greatest in hair removal. You have until Friday to complete it.”
Fiona left the office and found Jim in the cafeteria having his cup of coffee and eating his pineapple donut. This has been his way of life every morning, ever since Fiona met him five years ago. He was even starting to look like a donut.
She thought to herself, this going to be the most boring project I have ever done.
Fiona filled Jim in on what the boss wanted. They both agreed after doing some brainstorming that the easiest way to complete this project was to phone the most famous hair removal salon in the area, where all the local celebrities went, which was the Everything Wonderful Beauty Salon.
The owner Madam Kelly of the salon was enthused over the idea, which kind of shocked Fiona. Madam Kelly said it was a great way for the salon to get some free publicity, which would attract more clients for hair removal. She also thought it was a Win/Win for all concerned since there are some really exciting innovations in hair removal these days.
Fiona stated thinking that maybe this wouldn’t be as boring a job as she had first thought.
Upon arriving at the salon, Fiona discussed with Kelly about what the show would cover and they decided on five of the various methods of hair removal. This would help the viewers to be able to make informed decisions on choosing the best hair removal methods.
Fiona realized that she wasn’t very happy with her own hair removal method and could really use a change so just maybe she could learn a thing or two for her own needs in the process. This was really starting to get interesting.
The series explored five ways to remove body hair: depilatory creams, electrolysis, waxing, laser hair removal and shaving.
Here is a summary of the techniques that Fiona observed, on these various methods of hair removal.
In the cream is a chemical that is applied to the skin that melts the hair away but while covering this method Fiona thought it was rather messy and boy did it smell. The person having it done said later that she had a severe rash from the harsh chemicals.
Next, Fiona examined electrolysis, which involves inserting a needle into the hair follicle and then an electrical current is applied to the follicle root. This burns the hair root preventing it from producing more hair.
Fiona was sure glad she wasn’t the one receiving those treatments especially when she discovered that each individual hair must be zapped with electricity. It can also take several treatments to destroy the follicle.
Wax is another popular treatment for hair removal. With this method the wax is heated until warm then spread over the skin in the direction of hair growth.
While watching this for the series, Fiona found out that the hair becomes embedded in the wax and linen strips and then once the wax cools and becomes firm the hair that is now stuck to the wax will be more easily removed. You do this by quickly pulling the wax and linen off in the opposite direction of the hair growth and the hairs get yanked out of the follicles.
In the interviews, many of the people having this treatment for hair removal told Fiona that although it was quite painful they believed it was actually worth it because it kept them hair free for several weeks. Fiona was somewhat skeptical.
Lasers work by emitting light at various energy output, wavelengths, and pulse widths, to burn the hair follicle. It’s not a permanent solution but may retard hair growth over time. Looked like lots of pain for a not so permanent solution but some of the patrons of the salon were sold on this method.
Two different methods were used at this salon:
1.Use razor blade and some shaving cream to shave the hair off.
2.Use electric razors, which the salon much preferred as they were faster and there was no mess to clean up like some of the other hair removal methods. This salon uses one of the new personal shavers. They find these little devices are really the latest and greatest in hair removal when compared with all the other types of hair removal they used in the salon.
Fiona was able to get all the nitty-gritty information that she needed to plan for her five part series. She was really proud of the work she had completed especially after creating a storyboard for each session.
Jim was able to get enough footage with Fiona doing the reporting and narrating as she explained from A -Z all about hair removal.
Once the series was televised, it got rave reviews in newspapers and magazines. The salon could not believe how much extra business this little series on hair removal brought in for them. They were as happy as Fiona.
